Reporter: Hello Dr. Eric Tayag. You’re one of the experienced doctors in the world to achieve this level of recognition. What inspired you to focus specifically on treating varicose veins?

Dr. Erique Tayag: The truth is, I wasn’t keen to speak about this publicly — because my motivation is deeply personal. A few years ago, my mother passed away due to a blood clot in her leg that blocked one of her arteries.

Everything had seemed normal. There were no clear signs of illness. Mum occasionally complained about numbness in her feet. Over time, greenish-grey varicose veins began to appear on her legs, which caused painful cramps. Her GP initially thought it was tendinitis, but when things worsened, she was referred to a specialist in Manila.

No one realised just how serious it was. But due to negligence and inappropriate treatment, ulcers started forming on Mum’s legs, and the infection quickly spread.

In the end, nothing could be done. A blood clot had formed in her leg and blocked the flow of blood to her lungs. Mum suffered a pulmonary embolism. Tragically, my grandmother also died from the same condition.

After going through those events, I made a promise to myself: I would dedicate my life to finding an effective solution for varicose veins.

What shocked me most during my research was discovering how many modern medicines and creams — sold openly in pharmacies — contain harsh chemicals that actually damage the veins. Even tablets can be harmful, as they can negatively affect the liver.

Compression stockings offer very little long-term benefit. They only provide minor relief during use. My mum wore them daily — but sadly, they made no real difference.

That’s why I’ve spent the last three years deeply involved in this field. If varicose veins — particularly in the legs — are left untreated, they can lead to serious complications. Veins play a vital role in delivering nutrients and oxygen to tissues. When varicose veins form, this function is disrupted. That can lead to ulcers on the skin — open wounds that, if neglected, can worsen rapidly and become infected. If certain bacteria, such as streptococci or other pus-forming strains, enter one of these ulcers, the situation can become very dangerous.
These bacteria are often resistant to common antibiotics. Even bandages used during treatment can sometimes worsen the condition. In some cases, they can lead to sepsis — a life-threatening response to infection.
The most severe risk is blood pooling, which greatly increases the chances of developing a blood clot.
If a clot forms and isn’t detected in time, it can travel through the bloodstream and block vital pathways. If it reaches the heart, it can cause a heart attack. If it reaches the brain, a stroke. And if it travels to the lungs, it can trigger a pulmonary embolism — which can be fatal within minutes if not treated immediately.

This patient suffered from stage 1 varicose veins. As you can see, the symptoms completely disappeared within 9 to 10 days of using the products.

Yes, there are many on the market — but most of them are based on the same outdated methods. They’re often ineffective, and many come with unpleasant side effects. Some can actually make the condition worse.
